For girls interested in high-level competitive play and more dedicated practice and development time, the PWYSA offers a dynamic travel league program. Tryouts are necessary for proper level of player placement, and are conducted in mid-February. Evaluations assess hitting, infield, outfield, and throwing skills. There are also separate evaluations for pitchers and catchers.
Playing at a certain level one season does not guarantee a roster spot at that same level/team in the following season. Each season, the player will have the opportunity to place into the appropriate level, based on their tryout evaluation, and head coach's evaluation from the previous season. In travel softball, the emphasis is on skill development and teamwork, all in a competitive and positive environment.
What are the main differences between the Travel and Recreational programs?
The Recreational program is typically one practice and one game per week, with a season-ending weekend tournament in July. Practice begins in late April. Total games played are approximately 15. League games are local, and played with Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Maple Grove. The Rec program offers programs for kindergarten to high school ages.
The Travel program typically involves two practices per week, and one doubleheader during the week. Each team will also play in 4 weekend tournaments. Each team also participates in the State tournament, and if possible, may also compete in the National tournament in later July. In some instances, "A" level teams may choose to participate in additional tournaments. Travel practice begins in indoors in early March, and the season ends in mid-to-late July. Total games including tournaments can total up to 40 or more.
Weeknight doubleheader league games involve travel to surrounding association fields. In some cases, "A" level teams compete in a league that requires a bit further travel. Weekend tournaments are chosen by the coaching staff of each Team, and are located in and around Minneapolis. It is rare that any travel team leaves the state of Minnesota for a tournament.
The PWYSA offers travel programming for the following levels:
8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U.
Other Key notable differences of Travel:

The PWYSA encourages our young athletes to try the travel program for a dedicated softball experience.

"The way a team plays as a whole determines it's success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime"
-- Babe Ruth
