Travel League Description

Overview

Our Travel program is focused on developing top tier fastpitch softball players to compete across various age levels. We will accomplish this with a strong focus on player and team development via organized practices and increased level of competition in league games and tournament play. Secondly, but equally vital, is to develop strong sportsmanship, attitudes & sense of community in our players as they learn to love the game. This is a great program and offering for participants looking for more opportunity to compete and to do so against associations from other communities.

Key Differences of Travel vs. Rec

  • Stronger Competition: Travel teams compete against similar skilled players in practice and teams from across the metro area
  • More Practices: Summer Travel teams start practice in March and have 1-2 practices per week
  • More Games: Travel teams play ~20 games at 8U & ~45 games at 10/12U
  • More Tournaments: Travel teams compete in 3-6 summer tournaments

Summer Travel Season

The Summer Travel season runs from March to July and involves 2-3 nights of practices or games + weekend tournaments.  For further information, visit our Summer Travel page.

Fall Travel Season

Fall Travel season runs from August to September and involves 2 practices per week, double headers on either Saturday or Sunday, and an end of season State Tournament.  For more information, check out our Fall Travel League page.

14U & High school (16U + 18) Season

We have re-introduced having teams at the 14U, 16U, & 18U levels (MN Softball views 16 & 18U together in a "High School" level).  We form these teams in August and they play together for a full 12 months (Fall thru Summer). The Fall season runs from August to September and involves 2 practices per week, double headers on either Saturday or Sunday, and an end of season State Tournament.  The Summer season is similar (2 practices per week), but has league games during the week in June & July and tournaments on weekends.  For more information, check out our 14U/High School Travel page.

Dedicated Skill Development

The PWYSA encourages our young athletes to try the travel program for a dedicated softball experience.  In doing so, we expect Travel softball to be that players main focus during the summer or fall seasons.

Tryouts & Team Formations

Summer & Fall Travel teams are selected based on tryout evaluations.  Evaluations assess hitting, infield, outfield, and throwing skills. There are separate evaluations for pitchers and catchers. Travel teams are formed by combining like-skilled athletes together thus creating Gold (top), Blue (2nd), and White (3rd) teams for competitive play.

Playing at a certain level one season does not guarantee a roster spot at that same level/team in the following season. Each season, the player will have the opportunity to place into the appropriate level, based on their tryout evaluation, and head coach's evaluation from the previous season.

Coaches:

We rely on volunteer coaches to provide strong leadership for our Travel program to be successful.  PWYSA will offer coaching clinics and other materials to support our coaches and help them succeed.  Apply here if you're interested in being a Head or Assistant Coach for a Travel team.

Team Managers

Every team needs a strong Team Manager!  Head Coaches will be assigned teams in TeamSnap and can assign a team manager to manage schedules, send messages, update rosters, plan team events, et cetera. Contact info@pwysa.com for any Team Manager questions.

PWYSA = Teamwork

"The way a team plays as a whole determines it's success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth it."
