We are thrilled to roll out our 2023/2024 Winter Training program. PWYSA has partnered closely with Wind Up Fastpitch to bring you these fantastic offseason training opportunities. We have also added additional hitting offerings from TC Fastpitch as well as strength & injury prevention program exclusive for PWYSA with Carrie Carlson at Empower Athletics.
Our Winter program includes various options of training, including 15 weeks of progressive hitting training, 12 weeks (2 blocks) of defensive skills, specialty hitting, pitching, catching, and our NEW! PWYSA 12U+ Strength Training options with Empower Athletics.

Sunday Skills: Develop your all-around skills including speed and agility, throwing and arm care, glove work, foot work, infield specific skills, outfield specific skills, and get yourself ready for spring tryouts.
Hit Club: Our exclusive PWYSA 15-week hitting progression. We will focus each week on the fundamentals of hitting, bringing athletes through a bottoms up progression to build solid fundamentals. Focus areas will include lower body, core, bat path, speed, introduction to short game techniques, and the mental side of the game. New this year: We have a Tuesday OR Friday option to choose from (select at registration).
Specialty Hitting:
Block 1: Mondays at the CMS Dome we are excited to offer a weekly clinic focused on short game: bunting, slapping, drag bunt, as well as mixing in power hitting and reps on the machines.
Block 2: Open cage time to continue practicing your skills.
Pitching Fundamentals: Back by popular demand, our weekly pitching clinics with Wind Up Fastpitch. These clinics will help all pitchers, beginners to advanced, focus on the fundamentals of their pitching motion. Sessions are grounded in the internal rotation (IR) method of pitching with focus on whip, hips and core, shoulders, and overall lower body drive. Learning the fundamentals and putting them to practice will build a strong pitching foundation for your next season.
Catching Fundamentals: Weekly catching fundamentals with Wind Up Fastpitch is back. Come and learn the fundamentals of catching including focus on blocking, framing, speed/agility behind the plate, transition from glove to hand, throw downs, and more! Our catchers are the leaders on the field, harness your skills and take hold of this incredible role.
Speed & Agility: New this year! Carrie Carlson will be hosting a PYWSA- specific program for our players ages 12+. Her focus is on strength training, mobility exercises, core training, and overall mind and confidence building to help our girls be more injury resistant and powerful. All exercises are specifically designed for softball movements. We will have two options of training 1 or 2 times a week, with a discounted bonus kick off in October. All 14U year round teams are highly encouraged to participate and any 12U+ non-year round players who are looking to increase their strength, power, and agility.
TC Train and Play: PWYSA players get a $10 discount on TC Fastpitch's off season Train and Play Saturday evening clinic. This is a multi-week off season camp, covering all skills offense, defense, pitching, catching, and game/scrimmage over a 4-hour session on Saturday evenings.

We promise this through constant feedback, checking for understanding, and encouraging athletes to make adjustments while learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Whitney Johnson
Two-time Summit League tournament MVP and 2013 Pitcher of the Year Whitney Johnson enjoyed a record-setting career for North Dakota State University. She ended her career as the Summit League’s all-time leader with 994 strikeouts. She was the Bison all-time leader in appearances (153), games started (131) and inning pitched (861.2), and second in opponent batting average (.185) and strikeouts per 7 innings (8.08 avg.) Johnson was a member of three Summit League championship teams and made three NCAA regional tournament appearances while at North Dakota State. She was the 2010 Summit League Freshman of the Year, a four-time all-league and all-tournament selection, and a two-time all-NFCA Midwest Region pitcher. Johnson was a 12-time league pitcher of the week and four-time national pitcher of the week.
Following her career at NDSU, Johnson went overseas to the Netherlands to pitch for Centrals de Bilt in Utrecht, just outside of Amsterdam. She led the Dutch league with a 0.75 earned run average, strikeouts, and fewest walks.
Tien Ly
Coach Tien Ly began his softball coaching career with his oldest daughter, Anna in Oswego, IL. All three of his daughters have played or play softball. In 2015, his 10U Shakopee team won Tier 1 fall state championship, and in 2018, he helped the Eden Prairie 10U team win the first ever MOA Nationals championship.
Coach Tien’s passion is with training and development of young players. His specialty is with hitting and catching. He has served as the off-season trainer for Edina, Lakeville, St Louis Park, Clutch Hitters, Midwest Power 14U and MN Ice, which he was also the head coach and player development director. He does private hitting and catching lessons out of TLC in Savage. Currently, he’s the hitting director for Mission Fastpitch and coaches the Mission 16U National team.
Coach Tien has 17 years experience, which has taught him to use a number of different methods to get great results for your athlete.
Meghan Dray
Former Minnesota Gophers catcher/first baseman Megan Dray played her first three years at North Carolina. She saw action in 126 collegiate games for the TarHeels and started in all 24 during the shortened 2020 season. As a sophomore, Dray started in 55 games as catcher and hit .301 with 41 hits for 12 extra bases. Defensively, she ranked 10th in UNC's single-season record book in runners caught stealing. As a rookie in 2018, she also played in 47 games where she split time at first, third and catcher. In her first season with the Gophers (2021) Megan started 29 games and in 2022 appeared in 51 games starting 49 of them. Prior to her time at North Carolina, Dray was a four-year starter for Brookville High School and led her team to the Virginia 3A State Championship all four years, including first-ever state titles in 2014 and 2015.
Alyssa Reina
Alyssa joined the Maroon and Gold following a very successful career at North Dakota State University as a catcher and utility player. During her years as a member of the Bison squad, she collected a career batting average of .314 and drove in 133 runs. Reina ranks seventh all-time at NDSU in slugging percentage (.570), home runs (29) and putouts (1,069). As an undergrad, she received numerous accolades including a three-time Summit League All-Tournament Team honor, 2015 Summit League Second Team, two-time NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete, 2015 NFCA all-Midwest Region Third Team, 2016 Summit League First Team and 2016 NFCA All-Midwest Region First Team.
Carrie Carlson
Carries is a NASM certified personal trainer and Youth Exercise Specialist with a passion to empower young athletes while gaining strength, both physically and mentally. She takes great joy in helping athletes gain confidence by empowering them to unlock and achieve their true potential in a safe and supportive environment. With years of experience under her belt, she believes in incorporating a mix of cardio, strength and conditioning, and flexibility training into her programming.
Tyana Kleis
Tyana is a full-time TC Fastpitch Academy instructor. She specializes in Hitting and Defense. She graduated from Delasalle High School in 2014, joined the Army National Guard from 2014 - 2020, coached at Delasalle from 2015 - 2017, played softball at Iowa Lakes Community College, and is now coaching at Osseo High School.
